Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty (BPV)

Balloon Pulmonary Valvuloplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat pulmonary valve stenosis, a condition where the pulmonary valve is narrowed, restricting blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs.

Procedure:

  • A thin catheter with a deflated balloon at the tip is inserted through a blood vessel, usually in the groin.
  • The catheter is guided to the pulmonary valve using imaging techniques.
  • The balloon is inflated to stretch the valve and improve blood flow.
  • The balloon is then deflated and removed, leaving the valve wider and functioning better.

Benefits:

  • Avoids open-heart surgery.
  • Quick recovery time.
  • Improved blood flow and oxygenation.
